Svarvtjärnsbergen is a roughly 35-hectare nature reserve beside Lake Stor-Svarven, about 9 kilometres west-northwest of Bergsjö. A well-trodden path starts at the information board and follows the lake’s northern shore through leafy mixed forest. Benches at several points offer places to rest and look out over the water.
The forest has hanging lichens, dead trees and signs of older forest fires. Pines grow among the boulders and on bare rocky ground, while spruce is more common in hollows. Northeast of the path, the rocky ground is home to pines that are several hundred years old. The lake, old forest and deciduous trees provide habitat for birds; marks made by black woodpeckers can be seen in some trees.
The reserve information warns that large parts of the area are inaccessible after storms, and that moving among the fallen trees can be dangerous. Storms in 2011 and 2013 brought down many trees. Nearby remains of charcoal kilns and summer farm buildings show that people used the area for charcoal production and forest grazing. No visit duration or seasonal opening period is stated.
Good to know
The path starts at the information board and follows the northern shore of Stor-Svarven. Take care around fallen trees, which the reserve information says can make parts of the area dangerous.
