Skärjån Nature Reserve extends from Lake Stor-Skärjan in the west to Axmar Bruk in the east. The 192-hectare reserve follows a river with deciduous forest along its banks. Walking bridges cross the water, and visitors can walk, fish, or stop at grill areas and wind shelters.
The river and forest also hold traces of earlier work and settlement: remains of old dwelling sites and charcoal-burning installations, as well as evidence of sawmills, iron production and timber floating. A narrow path beside the river was built for workers moving along the logging route. Timber floating began here in 1898 and ended in 1949; dams and other remains can still be seen along the river.
The reserve website carries a warning that Storm Johannes left many fallen trees, including trees across the walking trail, making it difficult to get through. It advises visitors to take care. In spring, the river can overflow its banks. The county directs people interested in fishing to Fiskekartan.se, its searchable map of fishing-management areas; fishing permits are required in the waters shown on that map.
Good to know
Take care on the walking trail: the reserve website warns that fallen trees make passage difficult.
