Långängarna is a 33-hectare nature reserve 6.5 kilometres southwest of the church in Sandviken. Do not go there now: Storm Johannes has left many trees blown down, the county says, and trees may still fall. The trail cannot be walked, and visiting the area is dangerous.
The reserve is on fertile ground once used for haymaking by Se village in Ovansjö parish, about 150 years ago. The old meadows have grown into mixed woodland, mainly aspen and spruce. Stone walls and shallow ditches are traces of the former farmland; around ten hay barns once stood here. Broad aspens host felt lichens at their swollen bases, and elm, maple, lime and ash also grow in the reserve.
The county says visitors can watch birds and look for plants here. It lists dark lungwort, baneberry, mezereon, hedge woundwort and wood vetch among the reserve’s flora. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, red-breasted flycatchers, stock doves and grey-headed woodpeckers breed in the area. Spring is the reserve’s particularly beautiful season, when hepatica and spring pea flower. That is a reason to return when visiting is safe, but the current warning takes precedence.
Good to know
