Kustleden is intended as a nature trail. The municipality says its facilities, including trail markings, boardwalks, bridges, fire sites and rest areas, should affect the natural environment as little as possible. Some table-and-bench sets and grilling places have been replaced.

The municipality maintains the trail and its facilities, except for sections inside nature reserves, which are managed by the County Administrative Board. It has an agreement with the Nordanstig Nature Conservation Society to inspect the route and carry out minor maintenance, such as clearing brush and checking signs and trail markings.

The municipality says the trail is generally in good condition and passable. It also says markings need improvement in several places and some boardwalks and bridges need maintenance. Fallen trees occur every year; the municipality works with landowners to clear affected sections as soon as possible.

There is no formal seasonal closure, but the municipality describes Kustleden as a summer-half-year trail, from May to September. Its maintenance work is aimed at making the route suitable for hiking during that period. This week, in early November, is outside those months, though the trail is not formally closed.
