estate inventory

The inventory of a dead person's assets and debts on the day they died, which is the first formal step in settling the estate (dödsbo). It is drawn up at a meeting with the heirs and others concerned, and is then sent to Skatteverket to be registered.

The registered inventory is the document banks and others ask for before they let the estate's representatives withdraw money, sell property or close accounts. After it, the estate can be divided between the heirs.

If the estate is small, a simpler document can sometimes replace it. Skatteverket's pages on when a relative dies explain the steps and the deadlines.
