At 2:06 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, the first report was received of ongoing deadly violence at Brinellskolan high school. A perpetrator armed with a sword had entered the school and injured several people.

Three minutes after the alarm, at 2:09 p.m., several police patrols were on their way to the school. Several schools and preschools in the area are being evacuated.

At 2:16 p.m., the first police patrol on the scene announced that a suspected perpetrator had been neutralized and arrested. According to police, shots were fired during the arrest, but the suspect was not hit.

As police continued to enter the school to secure the premises, a 17-year-old girl was found dead. Three more people were injured.

Two boys between the ages of 12 and 17 are still being treated for serious injuries, but their condition is described as stable. A third boy was slightly injured and was able to leave the hospital on Friday. In connection with the incident, Region Västmanland is going into a state of emergency.

The man who was arrested and detained for the attack is 18 years old, according to police. The suspect is a student at the school and had a key tag for the building. According to court documents that Dagens Nyheter has seen, he was sentenced to youth care last year for assault after an incident at a school in Fagersta.

On Friday, police conducted searches at two addresses in Fagersta with connections to the suspect.

On Friday evening, police and the municipality held a press conference, where it was confirmed that one person had been killed and three injured in the attack. The police have no reason to believe that there are more perpetrators.

On Saturday, police confirmed that the deceased was a 17-year-old girl.

On Sunday, police will continue their work at the crime scene, and the school will remain cordoned off for at least the rest of the day. At the same time, police are conducting hundreds of interviews with students and staff at the school.
