The person killed in the school attack is a 17-year-old girl, writes Fagersta-Posten, which has received confirmation from the girl's family. According to the police, the victims appear to have been selected at random.
"We cannot see today that anyone in particular was targeted," says local police chief Tommy Alriksson at a press conference.
Two people, boys between the ages of 12 and 17, are seriously injured but are reported to be in stable condition. One of them underwent emergency surgery on Friday, according to the patient injury report from Region Västmanland.
A boy, also said to be between 12 and 17 years old, was slightly injured, but was able to go home after treatment on Friday.
Motive picture still unclear
An 18-year-old perpetrator has been arrested and the police confirm that shots were fired during the arrest, but that he was not injured and did not require medical attention.
The suspect is being held in custody. Prosecutor Ann-Sofi Trossing does not yet want to say whether the 18-year-old has made any admissions.
There is intensive investigative work underway with interrogations and collecting information, but I do not want to go into more detail about what we have done, says Ann-Sofi Trossing.
The man's defense attorney tells TT that he has been in contact with his client on Saturday.
The school principal tells P4 Västmanland that the suspect is a student at the school and that he had a tag.
Our picture of what has happened is constantly growing in many ways, but it is too early for us to say anything concrete related to the motive picture, says Alriksson at the press conference.
Threatening image on TikTok
Shortly before the attack, a threatening image was posted on TikTok. The image has been published by several media outlets and shows a large sword lying on a guitar case. Dagens Nyheter notes that the toilet interior and equipment match those at the school.
We are aware of it, and it is of course information we will check, says Stefan Larsson, police spokesperson.
The dead girl was found when police entered the school to secure the premises, but police have not been willing to provide any details about the deceased.
We cannot provide any more information at this time out of consideration for the relatives and the preliminary investigation, says Stefan Larsson.
I'll tell everyone at school.
Despite the fact that the suspected perpetrator was neutralized and arrested as early as 2:16 p.m. on Friday, students at several schools remained confined until 6 p.m.
It takes time to search schools. We wanted to ensure that there were no more perpetrators, and schools also accommodate on their own initiative, says Stefan Larsson.
As for the investigation moving forward, the police expect to interview most of the school's students and staff, which is just over 450 people.
"So far, we have held close to 80 interrogations," says Alriksson.
