At 2:06 p.m. on Friday, August 21, the first alarm was received about ongoing deadly violence at Brinellskolan high school in Fagersta. A perpetrator with a sword entered the school and injured several people.
Three minutes after the alarm, at 2:09 p.m., several police patrols were on their way to the school. Several schools and preschools in the area were evacuated.
At 2:16 p.m., the first police patrol at the scene reported that a suspected perpetrator had been neutralized and arrested. According to police, live fire was used in connection with the arrest.
As police continued to enter the school to secure the premises, one person was found dead. Three more people were injured.
Two boys between the ages of 12 and 17 are still being treated for serious injuries on Saturday, but their condition is described as stable. A third boy was slightly injured and has been released from hospital. In connection with the incident, Region Västmanland is in a state of emergency.
The man who was arrested and detained over the attack is 18 years old, according to police. Several media outlets report that he was a former student at the school. According to court documents obtained by Dagens Nyheter, he was sentenced to youth care last year for assault after an incident at a school in Fagersta.
On Friday, the police are conducting searches at two addresses in Fagersta linked to the suspect.
At 5:56 p.m., the municipality announced that children and students were allowed to leave all preschools and schools in Fagersta that had previously been occupied.
At 9:00 p.m., the police and the municipality held a press conference, where it was confirmed that one person had been killed and three injured in the attack. The police have no reason to believe that there were more perpetrators. The municipality has activated its crisis support and has also established a memorial site.
On Saturday morning, Fagersta-Posten reported that the deceased was a girl in her late teens. The newspaper has received confirmation from the girl's family.
