The USA sees opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela's rightful president.
This message is given by Foreign Minister Antony Blinken four months after the election in Venezuela, where the sitting president Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by the government-loyal election authority.
"The Venezuelan people spoke clearly on July 28 and elected (González Urrutia) as president", writes Blinken on X and continues:
"Democracy requires that the people's voice be respected".
According to the official result announced after the election, Maduro's authoritarian regime secured another six years in power, with just over half of the votes. But the result has been questioned by large parts of the international community.
The domestic opposition has presented its own exit poll, which allegedly shows that González Urrutia actually won the election with around two-thirds of the votes. The opposition leader himself was forced to flee to Spain in September after being threatened by the regime.
