There were happy faces on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the initial Tuesday trading. By lunchtime, the important Nikkei 225 was up 1.6 percent, while the Topix index was up 1.2 percent.
The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong, on the other hand, was down 0.5 percent. Shanghai's composite index also fell by 0.3 percent, while Shenzhen's composite index was up 0.4 percent.
