In total, 261,342 private cars were registered in 2024. This is over 29,000 fewer cars compared to the previous year and the lowest number in over ten years, according to the Transport Agency's figures.

The new registration of pure electric cars landed at 97,079 last year, a decrease of over 16,000 cars.

"This corresponds to a decrease of over 14 percent," says Mikael Andersson, press chief at the Transport Agency, in a press release.

The decline has several explanations, according to the authority.

"The abolition of the climate bonus may be a contributing cause, political decisions that have reduced the cost of fossil fuels another. But also that we are living in economically uncertain times and an electric car is generally expensive to purchase, which can have an impact," says Mikael Andersson.

The carbon dioxide emissions from the average private car decreased from 61.3 grams per kilometer to 59.06 grams per kilometer between 2023 and 2024.
