Strikes Intensify at German Carmakers as IG Metall Demands Pay Rises and Job Guarantees

German metalworkers have stepped up strikes to press for wage increases and job guarantees. Carmakers including Volkswagen's Audi and Mercedes-Benz Group, as well as component maker Schaeffler, were hit on Monday and Tuesday after a strike ban expired in October.

The German trade union IG Metall is demanding a 5 percent wage increase over one year, along with measures to protect jobs and factories from layoffs and closures.

Employers have offered a one-off payment in 2027 equivalent to 1 percent of gross pay and a 1.3 percent wage increase from the summer of 2028.

Schaeffler announced on Tuesday that it is closing five production sites in Europe and cutting 3,460 jobs, three-quarters of them in Germany.
