Sweden's previous neutrality and non-alignment
Neutrality means not taking sides when two states are at war with each other. Non-alignment means not binding oneself in solidarity with other countries. Sweden has had an unbroken peace for over 200 years, since the war against Norway in 1814. During the period between the First and Second World Wars, Sweden was actively involved in efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts. Sweden kept a low profile when war threatened during World War II, and in 1939, Sweden declared itself completely neutral.
Why Sweden joined NATO?
The Swedish government believed that membership in NATO is the best protection for Sweden's security. Membership in NATO means that Sweden receives defense guarantees, but also entails obligations that NATO is built on.
What does NATO membership mean for the individual in Sweden?
Apart from the total defense obligation that has applied since before, there are no extra demands on the individual with NATO membership. Sweden will, however, participate in NATO exercises. If you work at a workplace with connections to critical societal functions, you may notice that civil defense is being built up at a faster pace. If you work within the defense forces, it may involve service abroad.
Will Swedes be drawn into defense operations?
Since NATO membership is based on defense guarantees, Swedish personnel will participate in defense operations abroad. The same applies to personnel from other NATO countries participating in activities to defend Sweden.
Sweden is expected to contribute personnel to NATO's military and political organization. If another NATO country is attacked, Sweden is obligated to help defend that country. Sweden will provide both civilian and military assistance within NATO membership.
Will nuclear weapons be placed in Sweden?
NATO countries can decide to place nuclear weapons in Sweden, but currently, the Swedish government sees no reason to have nuclear weapons in Sweden.
Cost of NATO membership
2% of GDP is to be allocated to defense, of which at least 1/5 of the budget should go to material investments. The annual fee to NATO's civilian and military budget is 50 million euros for Sweden.
