An unusually strong earthquake has occurred in Gällivare, LKAB reports. It is one of the largest vibrations or subsidences ever measured, says Ulrika Huhtaniska, press officer at the mining company.

LKAB has preliminarily estimated the earthquake at 2.7 on its own scale.

It happened in a hanging wall, so it has not affected the mine, roads, infrastructure or areas where personnel are located, according to Huhtaniska.

The quake was still so strong that it was felt in the community as tremors. Work on the hanging wall has now been temporarily halted.

Loading has been going on right next to it, but it has now been stopped to let the mountain calm down a bit.

LKAB has begun an investigation into the cause of the earthquake. Earlier during the night, a smaller earthquake also occurred in the same part of the mine.

It is still unclear when work will resume.
