The Social Democrats do not attach much weight to the state inquiry that has been handed to the government regarding profits in independent schools. None of these proposals will stop either overcompensation to independent schools or their ability to extract profits, says Anders Ygeman.

The investigation proposes, among other things, that independent school principals who mismanage their school operations be prevented from expanding or starting new schools. Affected municipalities should also express their views on the consequences of establishing independent schools.

The aim is to discourage actors who conduct school activities from compromising on quality.

Anders Ygeman, education policy spokesperson for S, says it is not certain the government will move forward with the proposals.

But even if the government did, it would only mean that profit leakage from Swedish classrooms would continue, he says.

Want municipal veto

S wants to go further and see a stop to new establishments instead of a restriction on expansion. Furthermore, they want a municipal veto and above all a ban on profits and an end to overcompensation of independent schools.

If we did that, we could hire thousands of new teachers and significantly improve school results, says Ygeman.

"Lamb legs"

Andreas Mörck, union director of the employers' organization Almega Education, says that there are parts of the proposals that are understandable - there should be "no unscrupulous actors running schools". But he is concerned.

"Involving the granting of permits from the Swedish School Inspectorate for activities that have already received approval will not work in practice," he says, adding that effective consultation with municipalities and independent schools must be achieved.

This risks locking things in and paralyzing, and rather reducing the conditions for serious, credible actors to conduct their business.
