The Liberals change party leaders often nowadays. At the extraordinary meeting after Midsummer, it will be the third party leader elected since Jan Björklund resigned in the summer of 2019.

Even though the party leader struggle has not begun yet, there are some possible names.

Romina Pourmokhtari

The star of the party, who at 26 years old became Sweden's youngest minister ever when she was appointed climate and environment minister in 2022. A role where she has received harsh criticism for the government's climate policy. As chairwoman of the youth association LUF, she was a tough critic of the Sweden Democrats. The question is whether she is the right person to take over in a situation where the Sweden Democrats are demanding ministerial posts in a potential next government? And where the question still plagues the Liberals internally.

Lotta Edholm

Minister of Education with long experience in the party, including in Stockholm politics. Has the advantage of being responsible for a large part of the party's core issue – education policy. A veteran with broad anchorage in the party.

Mats Persson

Currently Minister of Labour, previously Minister of Education and economic policy spokesperson. Struggling to make an impression as a minister, but has not made any significant marks. Heavyweight in the party, was involved in negotiating the Tidö Agreement.

Dark horses: education policy spokesperson Fredrik Malm, newly appointed party secretary Simona Mohamson, EU parliamentarian Karin Karlsbro.
