The order intake for durable goods at American companies fell by 0.8 percent in September, according to statistics from the US Department of Commerce.
A clear decline in orders for commercial aircraft, minus 22.7 percent, in the wake of a prolonged major strike that is shutting down Boeing's production weighed heavily. But it also pointed downward for the order intake for computers, electronic equipment, and machinery.
Excluding transportation equipment, the order intake increased by 0.4 percent.
High interest rates and uncertainty about the policy after the US election on November 5 are contributing to dampen the order intake.
