15 minutes of reading every day – and preferably in physical books. This will be the reality for Norwegian school children after a national initiative that will once again place them "among the world's best readers”.

The Norwegian government presented its main initiatives for schools on Monday. They want to allocate one billion Norwegian kronor, distributed over a period of four years, to improve the reading skills of Norwegian pupils.

Previously, Norwegian children were among the world's best readers. But today, 15,000 Norwegian children finish primary school without being able to read well. This is serious. Norwegian children should once again be among the world's best readers, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre during a press conference.

Pupils who need help with reading will also get adapted help more quickly and a national reading commission, which will develop a Norwegian reading strategy, will be established. It is still unclear what will be cut from the current teaching to make time for reading quarters.
