Wednesday's yes vote of 458 to 103 opens the way for a quick agreement with the EU member states on the issue.
The extension to August 2027 is to avoid creating regulatory chaos while waiting for the EU member states and Parliament to agree on a longer-term solution to the so-called CSAM regulation - or "chat control" as it has been dubbed by its opponents.
The regulation concerns how police and other authorities can act against abusive material online. However, critics believe that the original proposal opens the door to major interventions against private e-mail and chats.
Negotiations on the regulation are ongoing between Parliament and the member states, but are expected to be completed by the summer at the earliest.
