The smog consists of small particles, less than 2.5 micrometers in size, which are unhealthy to breathe. According to Erik Svensson, environmental investigator at the City of Gothenburg, the air pollution has blown in from Central Europe.
"We get periods like this with high levels a couple of times a year. But this period has lasted longer than before," he says.
Asthma may worsen
On Wednesday morning, the air quality was assessed as unhealthy in the city of Gothenburg, but people in good health do not need to worry.
Those who may notice it are people with respiratory problems, such as asthma, who may have greater problems, says Erik Svensson.
But it's not just Gothenburg that has been affected. A visible haze has also been seen over the city of Uddevalla and according to SMHI, large parts of Götaland are affected by elevated levels of particle pollution, reports Bohusläningen. However, SMHI does not use the term smog.
Calling it smog is a bit of a stretch. This can affect people with asthma, but for most people it's just noticeable as a light haze, meteorologist Hilda Westberg tells the newspaper.
“On the way down”
Air pollution began to be felt as a haze over Gothenburg on Monday. In the evening, levels dropped slightly, only to rise again on Tuesday. But on Wednesday the situation has improved again, according to Erik Svensson.
"There can always be unpleasant surprises, but the signs right now are that levels are coming down. They are lower now than they have been before," he says.
