The battery manufacturer Northvolt is moving the development of what the company calls the next generation of lithium battery technology from California to Västerås, the company announced in a press release.
The existing research and development department at Northvolt Labs in Västerås will be responsible. According to the company, the change is being made to gather all development and research on battery cells in one place, a facility where the company can take advantage of expertise and opportunities that are "unparalleled in the Western world".
The operations in California are currently being conducted by Northvolt's subsidiary Cuberg in the San Francisco area, a company that was acquired in 2021. Behind the concentration to Sweden lies, according to the company, a thorough analysis of the conditions for achieving success and developing products that can be mass-produced in a cost-effective manner.
