The background is that, ahead of this autumn's elections, the Left Party has removed around 20 people from its municipal and regional election lists for, among other things, antisemitic statements or support for terrorist groups. This follows revelations in Expressen, which prompted V to act quickly by removing or excluding them.
Mattias Karlsson is the group leader for M in the Riksdag. He writes in a request to the Speaker and the group leaders of the other parties that Swedish democracy is based on parties operating openly and independently and with respect for democratic values. Parties also nominate representatives in elections, for committees, boards and other assignments in society.
Mattias Karlsson believes the issue is bigger than the revelations made by the media, and he calls Expressen's revelations about V representatives "very serious."
"It is ultimately about Sweden's ability to resist extremist environments, foreign interests and anti-democratic forces that may try to influence, exploit or gain entry into Swedish political parties," Karlsson writes in his request.
It is unclear if and when the debate will take place. The group leaders will next meet on June 17, the last regular day before the summer recess for the Riksdag. However, the Riksdag will meet for two days in August to decide on legislative proposals that came from the government in the early summer.
