Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted by a man on a square in Copenhagen on Friday.

The man has been arrested.

The Prime Minister's Office, roughly the Prime Minister's staff, states in a written statement that Frederiksen is shocked by the incident.

The assault occurred on Kultorvet in central Copenhagen, where Mette Frederiksen, representing the Danish Social Democrats, was allegedly struck by a man in an unknown manner. The man was subsequently arrested.

According to Danish TV2, the police have left the scene.

Danish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson writes on X that he hopes she is well.

"An attack on a democratically elected leader is an attack on our democracy as well. Tonight, my family's thoughts are with her."

The leader of the Swedish Social Democrats, Magdalena Andersson, calls the information about the incident "terrifying".

"That a head of government is attacked two days before an election is an attack on our open and free society," she writes on X.

EU Council President Charles Michel condemns "this cowardly aggressive act", in a post on X.

Several politicians in Denmark have commented on the incident.

Pia Olsen Dyhr, leader of the Socialist People's Party, calls the incident "completely unacceptable", according to BT.

"Full sympathy and support for the Prime Minister. Violence is never okay," writes Morten Messerschmidt, leader of the Danish People's Party, according to TV2.
