The telephone meeting on Tuesday was said to have been "extremely frank" according to the Russian presidential office.
The conversation lasted "exactly an hour," Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters, according to several news agencies.
The move from Moscow comes after US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this weekend.
The White House has not yet commented on the call.
