On a map published on Trump's own platform Truth Social, the American flag covers several countries.
In addition to Greenland - which the president has repeatedly hinted at and threatened to take control of - Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean countries such as Cuba and Jamaica are also painted in red, blue and white.
"Mexico is neither a colony nor a protectorate of any foreign country," Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responds on X.
Several Icelandic politicians are also reacting with anger, writes the Icelandic newspaper Vísir (DV). Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir has summoned US Ambassador to Iceland Billy Long to a meeting.
"The position was clearly expressed that the post was completely inappropriate," Iceland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to the public service broadcaster RÚV.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, currently in Greenland, said the island's future is determined by the Greenlanders themselves - and that they have repeatedly said they do not want to be American.
And of course, Greenland is not for sale, she says, according to Danish media.
The publication of the map comes shortly after the EU, Greenland and Denmark signed an agreement on billion-dollar investments in Greenland on Monday.
It also comes against the backdrop of the US's escalating trade war with neighboring Canada, where increased Canadian tariffs on American goods have just come into effect in response to Trump's latest tariffs.
The United States also has a very strained relationship with Cuba, where the US blockade has created an increasingly severe shortage of food, medicine and medical equipment.
