Heavy rain and flooding on September 7 and 8 this year led to catastrophic consequences in Västernorrland. Over 40 roads were destroyed, trains were derailed and one man died where a road was washed away.
The Swedish Forest Agency is now publishing an evaluation, which DN reports on, in which they state that forestry measures affected the damage pattern. According to the Swedish Forest Agency, it is scientifically proven that logging, construction of forest roads and land preparation affect the risk of erosion, landslides and mudflows.
The authority also warns that the same mistakes could be repeated.
"They are building in exactly the same risks again and in some cases have made them worse. It is very short-sighted and frankly dangerous," says Anja Lomander, a soil specialist at the Swedish Forest Agency to DN.
