The ruling means that LKAB is allowed to expand its iron ore mining in Malmberget. In addition, LKAB is also allowed to build a sponge-iron facility that will, among other things, supply steel group SSAB's new electric arc furnace with raw material.
The permit also includes the establishment of an apatite plant (a phosphate mineral).
It is fantastic that we have received the permit, Monika Sammelin, area manager for LKAB Malmberget, said to TT.
Regulatory bodies, such as the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, have demanded purification of uranium discharged from the mine into the Lina River, which flows through Gällivare.
We have agreed to build a large treatment plant, Monika Sammelin said.
The verdict can be appealed.
