The Liberals' extraordinary national meeting yesterday gave the party leader majority support for the new SD line, even though many delegates showed their dissatisfaction by not actively voting for Simona Mohamsson.
"Now a red line that could have complicated matters has disappeared," says Kristersson.
Last fall, he invited the three other Tidöl leaders to his home in Strängnäs to discuss continued cooperation after a possible election victory. However, that meeting was overshadowed by the Liberals' refusal to sit in a government with SD.
"Now there will be a new meeting, and we can discuss even more issues," says Kristersson.
SD party leader Jimmie Åkesson assumes that they will then discuss the government issue. He believes that M and KD should reach a decision before the election that all four parties can sit in government together.
"It is important for our team that this happens, given how divided the opposition is, in order to show that the cooperation we have had is now developing into full cooperation in government."
Clear advantage?
KD leader Ebba Busch describes the new situation as Kristersson now having a clear advantage on the government issue over prime minister rival Magdalena Andersson (S).
In addition to L accepting SD in a possible future government, their agreement means that both parties will work for a referendum on the euro in 2030 and that the "profit interest" will be phased out of schools.
However, M and KD are not bound by that agreement in any government negotiations after the election.
"It is not surprising that two parties agree to pursue a common line in negotiations," says Kristersson.
Different picture
L and SD have different views on what it means for the "profit interest" to be "phased out".
"This means a profit ban," says Mohamsson.
But Åkesson does not agree that this means a profit ban.
"I have a hard time seeing how one can ban profits in private companies," he says.
Mohamsson hopes that L's new line on the government issue will be a fresh start for the party. But many Liberals do not like that L now agrees to sit in the same government as SD, and have said that they intend to resign from their positions.
"I respect that if you are a leading representative and want to be involved and take responsibility in leadership positions for the party, it will be difficult if you do not agree with this line," says Mohamsson.
