Heat and drought in Europe have contributed to the drying up of the major rivers Rhine and Danube, and the low water levels have in turn led to a lack of cooling water for the reactors.

The consequence has been something of an energy crisis in both Hungary and other countries, where, in addition to increased imports of electricity, households and industry have also been forced to reduce consumption.

The four reactors in Paks are of the Russian model. They account for up to 40 percent of Hungary's total electricity supply.
