Government Faces Steep Challenge Ahead of Next Year's Election

Almost 13 percentage points now separate the blocks. The Uppförsbacken is long for the Tidö parties ahead of next year's parliamentary election. They must do something that shakes the voters. But there are not many signs of what it could be, says political scientist Jonas Hinnfors.

Thursday's SCB measurement was a dismal reading for the government parties and the cooperation party SD. There the gap between last year's Tidö parties and the opposition increased from 7.6 percentage points to 12.8 percentage points.

According to Tommy Möller, professor of political science at Stockholm University, the numbers were expected, but bad news for the government side.

We have also delivered quite well on our election promises when it comes to fuel prices, electricity prices and we have lowered taxes, which is a moderate's hobby horse. We have also been very active when it comes to gang crime, says Tommy Möller.

But it has not resulted in strong opinion poll numbers.

”Halmstrån”

Can the Tidö parties catch up to the parliamentary election?

We often have quite even elections and we know that there is a large mobility in the electorate. The government issue is not even clear on the other side.

But it's just straw we're talking about in this situation. The central thing in SCB's measurement is that it's a very long uphill climb for the government side, says Tommy Möller.

”KD was smoked"

Jonas Hinnfors, professor of political science at Gothenburg University, believes that a lot can still happen. At the same time, he points to two factors that speak against the Tidö parties.

That the gap widens and that stability is so strong to the extent that the Tidö parties do not seem to be approaching, which speaks for the fact that they must be worried, says Hinnfors.

According to him, it will require the Tidö parties to propose major reforms or something dramatic to happen in the outside world that in some way benefits the government side.

It's hard to predict the future. Before the 2014 election, I said something about the Christian Democrats being smoked. So it didn't happen. But yes, it's a huge uphill climb, says Jonas Hinnfors.
