In just ten days, five people have drowned on the Spanish Canary Islands, reports Canarian Weekly.
The rescue service on the island group reports three fatalities on Tenerife, one on Fuerteventura, and one on the main island of Gran Canaria. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 62 drownings have been reported.
Over 60 percent of the deceased were tourists from countries other than Spain. Just over half of the accidents occur in connection with beaches, and Tenerife is the hardest hit island.
The local authorities have been urged to strengthen education on water safety and increase the number of lifeguards.
