The cardiologist who wrongly declared a large number of children with heart disease in Jönköping healthy is now being reported to the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, IVO. 38 children need continued care, a review shows, several of whom are considered serious cases.

This is not something that has happened intentionally or consciously, but rather mistakes and misjudgments have occurred, says Simon Rundquist, operations manager for the children's clinic, to TT.

A total of 500 medical records for children previously declared healthy by the doctor have now been reviewed again. 78 of the children, who were cared for by the doctor between 2018 and 2022, needed to be called in for new examinations.

Of the 38 who need continued care and follow-ups, seven are considered serious cases, three of which require surgery in the near future.

These children are now going back to where they should have been all along, namely under our control at the reception, says Simon Rundquist.

Region Jönköping has previously filed a report against Ivo under Lex Maria, but now another one is being filed. In addition, a report is being filed against the doctor as an individual, including for deficiencies in handling medications and patients and deficiencies in interpreting ultrasounds.

Whether the affected children will suffer because their care was delayed remains to be seen, according to Simon Rundquist.

"We believe that we have caught the children in time and that very few will suffer from it. But it is too early to answer with one hundred percent certainty yet," he says.

It was not until 2024 that there were any reports of suspected medical errors, according to the region. Now, children who were declared healthy between 2014 and 2017 will also be examined, a total of 280 cases.

There is of course a risk that more people will have to be called back.
