Romina Pourmokhtari Gains Support for Liberal Party Leadership

Two more associations want to see Romina Pourmokhtari as the new party leader for The Liberals, when the time to nominate expires. But the heaviest L-associations are keeping their candidates secret.

The deadline to nominate a new L-leader after Johan Pehrson is tonight at 12 o'clock.

So far, The Liberals in Västerbotten, Kronoberg, Jämtland, Skaraborg, Södermanland, as well as the Liberal Youth Association and the Liberal Students have backed Environment and Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari.

On Monday, Dalarna also joined the associations that want to see Pourmokhtari in the position, and later in the evening, The Liberals in Jönköping also backed the Environment and Climate Minister, reported Jönköpings-Posten.

We see in her a knowledgeable person in the matter and a skilled debater. We also believe that Romina can attract new members and be a role model for a new generation in politics, says regional councilor Jimmy Ekström to the newspaper.

The Big Deciders

Dalarna has also nominated former Riksdag member Erik Ullenhag, Education Minister Lotta Edholm, and Riksdag member Nina Larsson, in no particular order.

Only one association, Västmanland, has openly nominated Lotta Edholm as its first choice for the position.

However, it is the three large associations – Stockholm, Skåne, and Västsverige – that can decide the matter. Together, they account for nearly 60 percent of the delegates who will elect a new party leader at the extraordinary national meeting on June 24.

All three associations have told TT that they will not publicly disclose their candidates until then, but will keep the process internal.

According to P4 Örebro, Örebro will not go public with whom they want to see in the position either. The same applies to Östergötland, reports the chairman to TT.

To be elected, a candidate must receive over 50 percent of the votes. If no candidate receives over 50 percent, the two who received the most votes will face off in a new vote.

More than in Media Speculations

Lars Persson Skandevall, chairman of The Liberals' election committee, says that the engagement to nominate has been great.

There are many who have sent in names, it's a good pressure in the party land. Many have also come up with inputs on what skills and abilities one wants a new party leader to have, he says.

How many names have you received so far?

I don't want to say since we haven't closed the whole thing yet. But it's more than the names that are flying around in media speculations.

The election committee will present its candidate about a week before the national meeting.
