Chinese Chery Automobiles' production of cars at car manufacturer Ebros' factory in Barcelona has begun over the weekend, reports Bloomberg with reference to the Chinese state news agency New China.
The production will initially involve the car models S700 and S800 – so-called urban SUVs that will be produced both with combustion engines and in so-called hybrid models.
With this, Chery becomes the first Chinese car manufacturer with production in Europe. The goal is to reach a production of 150,000 cars per year by 2029.
The plan is to move from assembling largely finished Chinese car parts to increasingly using European-produced car parts, in order to eventually avoid the EU's tariffs on Chinese electric cars.
Ebro was previously part of Japanese Nissan, but is today an independent Spanish car manufacturer.
