Marmafjärden canoe trail is a 3-kilometre route that takes about two hours to paddle. It starts and ends at Flottarkojan. The first wind shelter is on Hällholmen, and another shelter stands at the entrance to the old floating channel, where paddlers can stop for a picnic.

The trail passes wetlands and small islands in Storfjärden, of which Marmafjärden is a part. The area provides habitat for birds, including whooper swans and cranes. Swans breed in Storfjärden and stop there during migration in March and April and in autumn. Cranes’ trumpet calls can often be heard by the bay. Ospreys also nest in the area and may hover above the water as they look for fish. They are sensitive to disturbance, especially during breeding from April to mid-July.

The channel is lined with dense vegetation. It is one of the remaining traces of the timber-floating era, when Dalälven carried timber to large sawmills. Marmafjärden took its current form after Lanforsen’s power plant was built in 1930, and remnants of the former agricultural landscape include old, dying trees. Wear a life jacket, and treat the right of public access as both a right and a responsibility to care for nature.

Good to know
