Slakthuset

Slakthuset is a nightclub in a former slaughterhouse at Slakthusgatan 6 in Johanneshov. Visit Stockholm describes its setting as industrial, with several dance floors and clubs playing house, techno, hip-hop and R&B. In summer, a 600-square-metre patio is used as an outdoor bar and meeting place for Stockholm clubgoers.

The surrounding Slakthusområdet has a longer history. The venue’s website says Stockholm’s first slaughterhouse opened near Södra Station in 1888, as the growing city needed a more organised and hygienic meat supply. The slaughterhouse built at the current site opened in 1918. Designed by architect Gustaf Clason, it was among the most modern in Europe at the time, according to the venue’s website.

That industrial past sits alongside a redevelopment of the district. The venue’s website describes the work as happening in stages, with completion expected in 2035 and the area’s history intended to be preserved.
