Rosendal Palace stands on Djurgården in Stockholm, within the island’s hunting park. King Karl XIV Johan, the first Bernadotte, had it built in the 1820s as a summer retreat from court life in the city. It was not intended as a royal residence in the modern sense. Architect Fredrik Blom received the commission, and the palace was built in the style of a prefabricated house.

The palace is a document of Swedish Empire style, also known as the Karl Johan style. Its building remains largely as it was in Karl Johan’s lifetime. Visit Stockholm describes furniture, textiles and fixtures inside, designed and made by Swedish artists and artisans. A visit centres on the palace’s architecture and these interiors. Visit Stockholm says Rosendal Palace opens between June and August each summer. It is outside that stated opening season this week, on 2 November. The material gives no visit duration, ticket price or daily opening hours.
