Drottningholm Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sweden’s best-preserved royal palace from the 17th century. The palace was built to a French design by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder for Queen Hedvig Eleonora; later royal residents also left their mark. The King and Queen live there, with the southern wing kept for their use. Other palace rooms and the grounds are open to visitors year-round.
Inside are salons from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Outside, the grounds include a Baroque garden laid out from drawings by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger in 1681, the Chinese Pavilion and Drottningholm Palace Theatre. The theatre is an 18th-century building whose original stage machinery is still used regularly. It offers guided tours and performances in summer. Visit Stockholm says theatre tours are given in several languages several times a day.
Visit Stockholm says the palace and park are mostly open year-round, and recommends a bus from Brommaplan as the easiest way to get there.
