Nationalmuseum brings Swedish designer Wilhelm Kåge and Japanese potter Shōji Hamada together through ceramics shaped by a shared interest in form, clay, glaze and useful beauty. Kåge designed everyday objects for the Gustavsberg porcelain factory; Hamada ran his own workshop and became a central figure in Japan’s Mingei, or folk-art, movement.

The exhibition includes more than 200 objects from Nationalmuseum’s collection and around 100 works from Japanese museums and other lenders. Visitors can compare Kåge’s factory-made designs with Hamada’s handmade pottery, and see how two artists followed different paths towards making beautiful objects for everyday use. The show also considers cultural exchange and how art and design were used as soft power during a period shaped by war and peace.

Kåge’s ceramics have a particular connection to Sweden: Nationalmuseum says his Gustavsberg objects hold a natural place in Swedish homes. The exhibition also traces his exchanges with Hamada, who visited Sweden and later hosted Kåge in Japan.
