Junibacken’s “Midwinter in Moominvalley” is an immersive, interactive exhibition based on Tove Jansson’s 1957 book Trollvinter. It is open in Stockholm now and runs until 17 December. Visitors can slide through a soft snow landscape, roll among snowdrifts and build a snow lantern. Small and large winter creatures can roll giant snowballs as the northern lights spread overhead.
Sound and light shape the experience. Visitors can listen for an echo beneath the ice and the crackle of a fire, and find places to crawl close or rest. In Jansson’s story, the Moomintroll wakes during winter hibernation, frightened and alone at first, then discovers a cold world of unfamiliar creatures. The exhibition turns that story into a space for winter play and discovery.
