The Museum of Gothenburg follows the city’s history from prehistory through 19th-century life and the growth of modern industry. Its displays cover 12,000 years and include Sweden’s only preserved Viking ship, Äskekärrsskeppet. The museum is housed in the 18th-century East India Company building.

A current temporary exhibition, “Landshövdingehus 150 years,” traces the rise, fall and restoration of this Gothenburg house type. The exhibition is scheduled to run until 2030. Visitors can explore how people lived in this part of Sweden and why Gothenburg is called the Swedish Amsterdam. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions, guided tours and city walks.

For families, there is a play room called the Children’s Museum. A shop, café and restaurant are also on site. The museum’s 2026 card costs SEK 150 (about US$15) and allows unlimited visits for a year; it is sold online and at the museums. The supplied information does not give individual admission prices or visit duration.
