Skatön Nature Reserve lies about 10 kilometres east of Söderhamn and covers 343 hectares. The long, narrow headland extends into the sea. Söderhamn Municipality owns and manages the reserve, which includes forest, coastal meadows, rocky shores and the sea.
Several sandy beaches lie along the coast, especially on the southern shore and at Skathamnen. The reserve also has large fields of rounded stones and beach ridges. Skatberget, the highest point on Skatön, rises 32 metres above sea level and looks out over the Söderhamn archipelago and open sea. The vegetation changes from salt-tolerant coastal plants, including sea crowfoot and marram grass, to grey alder woodland and pine forest with berry shrubs and the orchid Goodyera repens.
Visitors can swim and follow the marked trails. From Söderhamn, take Utviksvägen towards Utvik, where the public road ends and the bus terminus is. From there, follow the signed road for 2 kilometres to the car park at Svartsundsrännan. The trails on Skatön are signposted.
