Igeltjärnsberget is a nature reserve of pine forest, 4 kilometres west of Storvik in Sandviken municipality. The reserve covers 6.7 hectares. Its pines are generally 150 to 200 years old and about 18 metres tall; some are more than 200 years old. At higher elevations, the ground is less fertile, which suits pine trees.
Many pines have been attacked by a fungus called pine bracket, which causes the heartwood to rot. Holes in the trunks show where woodpeckers have nested. Owls and other birds can use the cavities later. The old pines and the forest’s undisturbed condition are among the reserve’s features, and the area is used for outdoor recreation. Visitors can look for the tree holes and old pines while walking in the forest.
Special rules apply in the reserve. Motor vehicles are not allowed. Visitors may not light fires, take wood, or damage trees, shrubs or ground vegetation. The reserve is managed by Sandviken municipality.
