Nicaragua shuts down Save the Children
Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega has shut down Save the Children and 14 other non-governmental organizations in the country, according to a decree. Ortega has acted increasingly authoritarian since he returned to power in 2007, and his government has shut down more than 5,000 individual organizations since 2018 in crackdowns on dissent.
Nicaragua releases political prisoners to Guatemala
The USA has negotiated the release of a total of 135 prisoners in Nicaragua, according to the White House. Among the 135, described by the USA as "unjustly imprisoned political prisoners", are students, members of religious groups and others who, according to the USA, "pose a threat to the authoritarian regime" under President Daniel Ortega.
Nicaragua Closes Aid Organizations
Nicaragua orders the closure of 1,500 individual organizations, many of which focus on aid or human rights, with immediate effect. The order from the Central American republic's government came on Monday and appears to take effect immediately.
