Daniel Ortega, together with his wife Rosario Murillo, has ruled the country in turns since 1979, but continuously since 2007. The other day, it was announced that they are cancelling the elections scheduled for November next year.
Now US Secretary of State Marco Rubio writes in a post on X that the country "will not stand by and watch" and that "the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship is intensifying repression in the country and creating instability that threatens US national security."
Since Ortega last came to power, he has crushed the country's political opposition and rewritten the constitution. As recently as January last year, he and Rosario Murillo were given control of the entire state apparatus through an amendment to the constitution.
