The police have received reports that a large number of people have been contacted by phone in a suspected fraud scheme.
In the calls, a pre-recorded English voice can be heard claiming to be calling from the “Swedish police”. The voice says there is a problem with the recipient’s identification documents and prompts the person to press a button to speak to an officer. The person is then asked for their contact details.
In the cases reported so far, the calls have come from phone numbers with the country code +47, which belongs to Norway.
The police urge the public to be alert:
• Do not give personal information to unknown callers.
• Do not follow prompts to press buttons or be transferred if you suspect the call is an attempted scam.
• End the call if you feel unsure.
Be cautious even if the caller claims to represent a government agency. A phone number or a claimed identity is not, in itself, a guarantee that the call is genuine.
Please help spread the information so that more people can be alert. This is an old-new method scammers use to get money from the people they call.
