The police have received reports that a large number of people have been called in a suspected fraud scheme.
In the calls, a prerecorded English voice can be heard claiming to be calling from the “Swedish police.” The voice says there is a problem with the recipient’s identity documents and urges them to press a button to be connected to an officer. The person is then asked for their contact details.
In the cases reported so far, the calls have come from phone numbers with the country code +47, which belongs to Norway.
The police urge the public to be vigilant:
• Do not give out personal information to unknown callers.
• Do not follow instructions to press buttons or be transferred if you suspect the call is an attempted scam.
• End the call if you feel unsure.
Be cautious even if the caller claims to represent an authority. A phone number or claimed identity is not in itself a guarantee that the call is genuine.
Please help spread the information so that more people can be vigilant. This is an old-new method used by scammers to get money from the people they call.
