Police have received reports that a large number of people have been called as part of a suspected fraud scheme.
During the calls, a prerecorded English voice claims to be calling from the “Swedish police.” The voice says there is a problem with the recipient’s identity documents and asks them to press a button to be connected to a case officer. The person’s contact details are then requested.
In the cases reported so far, the calls have come from phone numbers with the country code +47, which belongs to Norway.
The police urge the public to be alert:
• Do not give personal information to unknown callers.
• Do not follow instructions to press buttons or be connected to someone else if you suspect the call is an attempted scam.
• End the call if you feel unsure.
Be cautious even if the caller claims to represent a government agency. A phone number or a claimed identity does not in itself guarantee that the call is genuine.
Please help spread the information so that more people can be alert. This is an old scam tactic being used again by fraudsters to get money from the people they call.
