The police have received reports that a large number of people have been contacted by phone in a suspected fraud scheme.
In the calls, a pre-recorded English voice can be heard, claiming to be calling from “Swedish police”—that is, the Swedish police in translation. The voice says there is a problem with the recipient’s identification documents and prompts the person to press a button to reach a case officer. The person’s contact details are then requested.
In the cases reported so far, the calls have come from phone numbers with the country code +47, which belongs to Norway.
The police urge the public to be alert:
• Do not give personal information to unknown callers.
• Do not follow prompts to press buttons or be transferred if you suspect the call is an attempted fraud.
• End the call if you feel unsure.
Be careful even if the caller claims to represent a public authority. A phone number or a claimed identity does not in itself guarantee that the call is genuine.
Please help spread the information so that more people can stay alert. This is an old-new method used by fraudsters to get money from the people they call.
