Warning of fake police SMS in Region Mitt
A new variant of scam attempts via SMS is now appearing in mobile phones across large parts of Sweden.
The scam attempts have also appeared in Gävleborg, Västmanland and Uppsala counties.
The Police Authority's contact centre, PKC, has received several calls from anxious individuals who stated they received a message/SMS from the police.
The complainant received an SMS where they were urged to pay a traffic fine to the Police Authority and that the sender had sent a link. The scammer wants the person to click further on the link and there complete a transaction, the sender comes from different email accounts.
The messages are false and sent by scammers. The police strongly advise against clicking on the link. The cases that have come to the police have had a report of attempted fraud established.
The police do not send SMS/messages of an economic nature like these. If you are unsure, you should always contact the police via 114 14 before clicking on any link.
If you have been a victim of a crime or an attempt to commit a crime, always report this to the police. Information on how to report a crime can be found on Polisen.se or 114 14.
